Sun Protection and Skin Health: The Basics

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun can damage skin and increases the risk of skin cancer. Protection is simple and worth building into your routine.

Layer your protection

  • Seek shade when the sun is strongest, usually around midday.
  • Cover up with a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and tightly woven clothing.
  • Use sunscreen. Many health bodies suggest a broad-spectrum product with SPF 30 or higher, applied generously and reapplied about every two hours and after swimming or sweating.

Check your skin

Get to know your skin. See a doctor if you notice a new mole or spot, or a change in size, shape, color or texture of an existing one, or a sore that does not heal.

Good to know: Sunscreen reduces risk but is not complete protection, so use it together with shade and clothing.
